Global Fashion School Rankings 2015

Fashion Institute of Technology

New York, United States

FIT offers a business and design education with a foundation in liberal arts. Undergraduates can choose from a variety of courses, including fashion design, production management and textile development. Only 68 percent of MA programme students graduate from their courses, ranging from fashion and textile studies to fragrance marketing and management. Strongly linked to New York City’s fashion and creative industries, the school curriculum is built on industry partnerships and involves significant team-based learning. Independent study only makes up two to three percent of the educational programme. The majority of programmes require completion of an internship and, according to the institute, 90 percent of undergraduate students secure a work placement. FIT is planning a significant campus expansion with new academic facilities in 2017.

Student & Alumni Comments

"As it is in life, it is what you make of it. Show up and make your dreams your reality."

Alumni

"The Fashion Institute of Technology atmosphere is competitive and the course load is tough, but overall this college has provided me with the skills, work ethic and industry contacts necessary to thrive within the fashion business."

Alumni

"The best of both worlds! I was able to learn about fashion and get the best internships! Concrete jungle for real!"

Alumni

"I really believe FIT is among the last remaining US fashion schools that provides students with an adequate education in garment construction and patternmaking. It's a quintessentially old fashioned technical school, which has advantages and disadvantages alike."

Alumni

"Great, with minor flaws. Could improve on fashion theory and conceptualizing as well as business classes for fashion designers."

Alumni

"Exhausting amount of work. All nighters all the time. The courses were a bit basic. It was what you made of it. Technology was something severely missing from the curriculum. I had a few teachers whose advice and teaching stayed with me, but the true education came via working."
