Global Fashion School Rankings 2016

Fashion Institute of Technology

New York, United States

FIT offers a business and design education with a foundation in liberal arts. Undergraduates can choose from a variety of courses, including fashion design, production management and textile development. Most students in our survey expressed they were satisfied with the school’s campus and resources. Over 70 percent of BA students in our survey were satisfied with the school’s courses in business, marketing, technical skills and innovation. Meanwhile, only about 50 percent of MA students were satisfied with the education they received in technical skills. Strongly linked to New York City’s fashion and creative industries, the school curriculum is built on industry partnerships and involves significant team-based learning. Independent study only makes up two to three percent of the educational programme. The majority of programmes require completion of an internship and, according to the institute, 80 percent of undergraduate students secure a work placement. FIT is planning a significant campus expansion with new academic facilities in 2017.

Student & Alumni Comments

"It was very beneficial. The teachers are very helpful and knowledgeable because most of them are still very present in the fashion industry. The location is great and job placement after graduation is high."

Student

"It was loaded with not only academic studies but also various chances to work and complete internships. My classmates were all motivated and the school is highly competitive."

Student

"Great education but it needs to be updated in terms of technology."

Student

"I would characterise my time at FIT as an amazing experience! It has been so rewarding and eye-opening. The quality of professors and the diverse student body is amazing."

Student

"FIT has enabled me to intern for some of the top magazines and luxury brands in the industry, exposing me to so much before I even graduate."

Student

"My experience was positive. Student life could be improved. I also feel that there was a lot of repetitive material in my programme. I'm grateful for my opportunities and the people I have met."

Student

"Overall great experience. Some professors are not the best, very relaxed with little interest in teaching if students understand the material. As a full-time student and part-time worker, something I'm not satisfied with is the availability of the career services. The walk in hours have been the same all my semesters here and I always have class or work during them and there is little mobility."
