Global Fashion School Rankings 2016

RMIT University

Melbourne, Australia

With campuses spanning three continents, RMIT has a diverse international student body. Its school of fashion offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and vocational courses. With multiple campuses in Australia, Vietnam and Spain, RMIT delivers multi-channel education, offering online learning opportunities and “work-integrated learning,” taught in real and stimulated working environments. The institute is popular and places for classes are competitive, less than a quarter of applicants are accepted into the Bachelor of Fashion Design Programme (Honours). Overall, students felt prepared for the industry and gave positive feedback on faculty and learning facilities. However, undergraduate students have expressed discontent and suggest improvement within the university’s careers services. RMIT’s postgraduate program is becoming increasingly competitive with the number of applications tripling in the last year.

Student & Alumni Comments

"Well balanced, healthy approach to learning with a great work placement programme that culminated in full time work. A really great school to learn in. I still stay in contact with teachers, and would love the opportunity to teach there one day."

Alumni

"Overall I really enjoyed studying fashion at RMIT, but not all graduates are going to gain employment with high-end fashion labels and the reality of working for clothing manufactures of discount department chains (largest area of employment opportunities) was never covered or discussed."

Alumni

"It is a stable environment for learning and applying the new techniques taught. Great equipment and facilities. Resources are amazing. Teachers vary, as they all do. RMIT paved the foundation of my knowledge, which was essential in obtaining a job in the field."

Student

"A strong focus on conceptual design with a backbone of practical design and making skills. Diverse idea generation and material investigation, sophisticated visual communication and intensive creation of prototypes."

Student

"While the course work was interesting and useful, we where not prepared enough to enter the work force on completion of the course, and I don't feel adequate work placements took place during it."

Alumni

"The teaching staff are very well informed and have had hands on experience in the industry. Everyone strives to ensure you do well and understand the content. The Brunswick campus is a little run down and could have a bit more culture like the City campus, however, it does serve its purpose and you have support wherever you go."
