Global Fashion School Rankings 2017

Central Saint Martins

London, United Kingdom

The internationally-renowned centre for arts and design education has one of the most established reputations in fashion education and is considered a global leader in its field. The art school has won BoF's Global Fashion School Bachelors Ranking every year since launch, as well as the Masters Ranking in 2016. In addition to achieving the highest score for the employability of its students and maintaining its leading reputation among recruiters and academics, the quality of the school's teaching, its student body and the global reach of its alumni were all rated highly in our survey. However, with regards to business, marketing and sustainability courses, Central Saint Martins performed poorly, with all three courses scoring below 50 percent. In early 2017, after a collaboration of six years, the LVMH group and Central Saint Martins announced a major investment by LVMH to intensify the scholarship programmes and fund a groundbreaking sustainability and innovation programme. Additionally, student comments identified that peer-to-peer learning was an intrinsic part of the school experience, and that students expecting a lot of guidance would be disappointed. Despite the independence it expects of its students, CSM's continuing ability to identify and nurture excellence is beyond doubt, attested by an alumni network that includes many of the most influential names in fashion.

Student & Alumni Comments

"It was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, and allowed me to become a leader in my field. I don't believe any other school would have allowed me to push all the boundaries the way I did, and I now have a robust interdisciplinary creative practice."

Alumni

"I have done my foundation, my BA and am now doing my MA at Central Saint Martins. These courses are very tough. The best is expected of us, and I believe we are being guided towards that. The courses are mainly self-directed, which forces us from the very beginning to make our own decisions, and work things out ourselves. "

Student

"This is not a course you do if you need guidance; it's a course for the independent and hardworking, someone who is willing to learn independently and find their own solutions. That is creativity and creativity is the reason to go to Central Saint Martins."

Alumni

"It is an intense and completely transformative learning experience with industry design projects and collaborations overlapping with personal projects and research projects. Anything can be gained from this course for those who know what they want out of it. "
