The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) was to be held in Kigali from June 22 to 24, but has been postponed due to ongoing uncertainties associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fashion and textile industries were set to be a focus of this year’s Commonwealth Business Forum, which runs in conjunction with CHOGM, with members of the Commonwealth Fashion Council (CFC), including Lagos Fashion Week founder, Omoyemi Akelere, the Ghanaian founder of Glitz Africa Magazine and the Glitz Style Awards, Claudia Lumor, and Sheena Frida from the Kenyan Fashion Council, due to feature in panel discussions about re-thinking pan-Commonwealth cooperation.

The CFC is a council of fashion industry leaders from across the Commonwealth, an association of 54 sovereign states headed by Queen Elizabeth II that is home to 2.4 billion people living on six continents.

“The Commonwealth Fashion Council and its members remain determined to deliver Commonwealth Fashion sessions at the upcoming Commonwealth Business Forum for CHOGM,” said Daniel Hatton, the CFC’s chief executive and founder.

“The conversations I’ve had with members [have focused on our] continuing optimism for how the coming together of 54 nations will positively impact the Commonwealth and the global fashion sector,” Hatton added.

This is the second time the 26th edition of the biennial CHOGM summit has been postponed, it was initially due to take place in 2020.

In announcing this latest delay, Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, said: “The decision to postpone CHOGM for a second time has not been taken lightly. The health and welfare of all Commonwealth citizens at this critical time must take precedence. We look forward to welcoming the Commonwealth family to Kigali for CHOGM at the appropriate time.”
