Netflix has laid off a number of staffers and contractors — which reportedly included at least 10 full-time employees, according to the Hollywood Reporter — at Tudum, its “official companion site” that features editorial content about the titles on the streaming platform.

A spokesperson for Netflix confirmed that Tudum will continue to publish and that Michelle Lee, Netflix’s head of global editorial and publishing, remains in her role at the company. Lee left her post as editor-in-chief of Allure for Netflix last summer.

“Our fan website Tudum is an important priority for the company,” a spokesperson for Netflix said in a statement.

In recent years, Netflix, as well as other tech companies such as Google, Meta, Pinterest and Snapchat, have been recruiting journalists and magazine staffers to join their ranks with the promise of higher salaries and greater stability. Besides Lee, Whembley Sewell, formerly the top editor at Condé Nast’s LGBTQ-focussed publication Them, also left for Netflix in 2021.
