Harris’ fashion choices continue to be closely watched. While often her choices are celebrated by online watchers, last week the politician was criticised after wearing pieces from Italian luxury label Dolce & Gabbana on three occasions during in her first days in office.

“Someone seriously needs to tell her team about Dolce and their problematic issues with race,” wrote a commenter on Instagram, responding to posts by the Kamala’s Closet account run by Vittoria Vignone, according to The Guardian.

Vignone posted about her disappointment in the choices, noting that Harris has largely moved away from wearing European luxury labels in recent years. But she was primarily dismayed that Harris would wear a label like Dolce & Gabbana’s with a controversial history of what has been seen as tone-deafness as best and discriminatory comments and actions at worst.

Harris is working with Hollywood stylist Karla Welch, who was criticized on social media in 2020 for dressing several of her clients in Dolce & Gabbana for the Grammy Awards that February, marking an end to a year when the label was rarely worn on the red carpet. Lucio Di Rosa joined Dolce & Gabbana at the start of last year and is known for his close relationships with Hollywood and fashion stylists.

Former First Lady Melania Trump also frequently wore Dolce & Gabbana to events during the previous administration.
