The modest fashion e-commerce retailer criticised the European Court of Justice’s July 15 ruling that private employers can ban staff from wearing religious symbols at work.
Modanisa is based in Turkey and dispatches orders to over 140 countries, including the EU.
“There is nothing ‘neutral’ or positive about forcing a person of faith to have to choose between their job or their religious beliefs, which is what this unfortunate ECJ ruling does,” the company wrote in a press release. “The European Union’s top court has chosen to validate the very intolerance that led to two hijabi women losing their jobs in the first place…this ECJ ruling is dangerous and divisive, and calls in to question the EU’s claims to respect fundamental freedoms and human rights.”
