Ethan James Green
Photographer
The photographer’s distinct voice has garnered him high-profile campaigns for the likes of Adidas Originals and Alexander McQueen.
Ethan James Green began his foray into fashion in front of the camera, starring in campaigns for the likes of Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs . With the help of his mentor David Armstrong, he swapped modelling for photography, and quickly established himself as a disruptive force, subverting industry norms in his mainly monochrome portraits, while exploring sexual identity and questioning the many facets of contemporary constructs of identity.
Green’s distinct photographic voice articulates his unique vision of beauty and has been hailed for bringing a distinct intimacy and honesty to fashion media. He has shot campaigns for the likes of Fendi, Adidas Originals and the rebooted Helmut Lang, while his work has been commissioned by titles including Dazed (he shot Kate Moss for its 25th anniversary cover), WSJ Magazine, LOVE Magazine and i-D.
In 2016 the New York-based creative, who shoots exclusively using the digital medium, was announced as one of LensCulture’s Portrait Awards Series winners for his Young New Yorkers project.
In March 2019, the photographer released his first monograph, "Young New York," a defiant portrait of his peers on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The images, published by Aperture, were shot between 2014 and 2018 and taken primarily in Corlears Red Hook Park — a short stretch of green space on the East River that has been populated by outsiders since the 1800s — capturing a recently bygone moment in New York City life. Hari Nef penned the publication's foreword, and New Yorker writer Michael Schulman contributed an essay to the collection of photographs.
