Biography

Alastair McKimm is a stylist and creative director who has worked with brands such as Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein , Jil Sander , Alexander Wang and Versace. As well as creating campaigns and styling shows, where his ability to craft clean and precise looks gained him the respect of the industry, McKimm was the global editor-in-chief of i-D.

Born in Belfast, McKimm studied fashion design at Nottingham Art School and moved to London after graduation. McKimm eventually found his way into the i-D family as assistant to then-fashion director Edward Enninful . Since then, McKimm has established himself as a freelance stylist and consultant, working with both streetwear and luxury brands on campaigns and shows. He is known for his bold and modern aesthetic and ability to blend modern luxury with youth culture and streetwear.

In 2013, i-D magazine named McKimm its first New York fashion director. He left the position in 2018, but has also contributed to Vogue Italia, Interview and Self Service. In May 2019, McKimm returned to i-D as global editor-in-chief. In February 2024, McKimm announced that he would step down from his role at i-D. The news came just a day after the magazine’s new owner, model-turned-entrepreneur Karlie Kloss , announced the magazine would suspend publication in both print and online while the company revamps its business model.

McKimm said his process depends on the client. For shows, “some designers think in terms of line-ups, others think in terms of garments, and you have to come in and help them put it all together.”
