Biography

Baltimore-born Dan Peres spent two decades at Condé Nast, during which time he became editor-in-chief of Details magazine in 2000 when the title relaunched, where he remained until its closure in 2015.

Peres graduated from New York University with degrees in journalism and American history. While in college, he worked as a copy boy at The New York Times and, later, as a research assistant at Esquire. He spent nine years at magazine, starting as assistant editor and eventually becoming European editor, overseeing W’s bureaus in Paris, London and Milan.

During his tenure at Details, Peres brought to the magazine writers and columnists such as Augusten Burroughs, Michael Chabon, Anderson Cooper, Matt McAllester, Simon Dumenco and Rick Moody, along with top-tier photographers including Mark Seliger, Norman Jean Roy, Michael Thompson and Steven Klein . In 2007, Peres authored Details Men’s Style Manual: The Ultimate Guide for Making Your Clothes Work for You, published by Gotham Books. For the magazine’s September 2011 issue, he commissioned actor Ashton Kutcher to guest-edit Details’ inaugural Social Issue, which exists on multiple online platforms.

Under his leadership, Details won two ASME Awards for Design and earned several other nominations, including General Excellence. In 2003, Advertising Age named Details as an A-List Magazine, while MIN magazine included Peres as one of its 21 Most Intriguing People of the year.

In March 2019, Peres was named editor-in-chief of Gawker, a Manhattan daily news and gossip website, to lead the publication's revival. Founded in 2003, the site filed for bankruptcy in 2016 following multiple lawsuits. Bustle-owner Bryan Goldberg bought the website for $1.35 million in a bankruptcy auction in July 2018 and the website was set to relaunch in 2019. However, following months of staff turnover at Bustle, the site's entire staff was laid off in July 2019 and the launch has been delayed.
