Biography

Fabio Piras is the course director of Central St Martin's MA Fashion Course. Piras stepped into the shoes of the late Louise Wilson OBE after her untimely passing in May 2014.

Piras’ vision for his time as course leader is to shape a new era for MA Fashion education. “It is about focusing on the individual, the potential relevance and the significance of each student's creative expression,” he told BoF. “It is also about nurturing the ability to have an informed and original point of view and promoting the idea that it is always about a 360-degree creative understanding and 100 percent creative involvement."

Italian-born Piras knows the MA Fashion course well, having completed it himself. He lived in Geneva before moving to London for his studies, after which he went on to found his own eponymous label that showed during London Fashion Week from 1994 until 2000. He has also had a successful career in both creative direction and consultancy for luxury fashion brands in Europe and China. Piras worked closely with the late Professor Louise Wilson when she ran the MA course for eight years.

Central St Martins’ alumni list can read like a "who’s who" of the fashion industry. Students are known for their originality — always pushing the boundaries. Alumni include Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane Simone Rocha and Charles Jeffrey .
