Biography
The award-winning Dutch partnership between Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin started when the pair met while studying fashion in their native Amsterdam. The duo are renowned in the industry for their hyper-sharp, offbeat, artistic images. They were also some of the earliest adopters of digital photography; their early use of photo-editing techniques set the pair apart from their peers and increased their already impressive profiles further.
Both initially studied fashion design: Matadin from 1981 to 1985 and Lamsweerde from 1983 to 1985. Although the pair met at school, it was only when Lamsweerde was commissioned to photograph Matadin‘s 1986 Lawina collection, after their graduation, that the pair began to collaborate.
Following editorial assignments for the style magazine BLVD in Amsterdam, the pair’s fashion breakthrough story For Your Pleasure was published in The Face in April 1994. To date, Matadin and Lamsweerde have contributed to American, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and French Vogues, in addition to W, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Uomo Vogue, Vogue Hommes International, Purple Fashion, Interview, V, V Man, Self Service, Another, Pop, i-D, Fantastic Man and The Gentlewoman among many more.
In over 32 years, Lamsweerde and Matadin’s has amassed a roster of commercial clients that include the cream of the industry. They have collaborated on campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Balmain, Nina Ricci, Jean Paul Gaultier , Isabel Marant , Giuseppe Zanotti, Lanvin Homme, Miu Miu, Christian Dior Joaillarie, Gucci, Chloé, Givenchy, Calvin Klein , Balenciaga, Yohji Yamamoto , Chanel, Roberto Cavalli , Donna Karan , DKNY, Stella McCartney , Brioni, Moschino, Loewe, Mulberry, Emanuel Ungaro, Louis Vuitton and Helmut Lang. They are married with one son and live in New York.
In 2018, the duo partnered with the plant-based beauty line True Botanicals to shoot its Autumn/Winter 2018 ad campaign. Another partnership in February 2019 with jewellery company Menē saw Lamsweerde and Vinoodh venture into accessories, with their jewellery line debuted on the brand's website.
