Biography
Serving as art director of Vogue Italia since 1991, Luca Stoppini has overseen the publication’s creative visual layouts for over twenty years, until stepping down in 2018. A former architecture student, Stoppini joined the publication alongside Anna Piaggi in 1981, immediately establishing a strong visual identity for the publication. He was subsequently appointed to oversee L’Uomo Vogue and Casa Vogue. One of his most memorable layouts for the publication was a series of collages created in partnership with Debra Scherer, showcasing snapshots of American culture to the Italian style set.
Stoppini has worked on a number of creative collaborations throughout his career including advertising campaigns for Valentino and Prada. He has also creatively helmed multiple endeavours such as the Milano XL fashion sustainability exhibition in 2018. He has also designed visual layouts for a number of books such as “Animal: Dolce and Gabbana, Wildness”, “B.M. Beppe Modense’ and ‘Moschino” and lent his style expertise to budding fashion entrepreneurs. Actress Drew Barrymore, who launched her own magazine, Flower Press, in 2017, tapped Stoppini for cues on art direction, while editor-at-large of Vogue Japan, Anna Dello Russo published her first book, ADR Book: Beyond Fashion, art directed by Stoppini.
A celebrated artist in his own right, Stoppini has exhibited his personal contemporary artworks in a number of exhibitions such as the “Untitled” exhibition at the Michael Steinberg Gallery and Hudson Valley Centre for Contemporary Art in New York, the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and the Marrela Gallery in Beijing. In 2019, Stoppini presented film projections at Palazzo Reale for the Italian furniture company Kartell’s 70th anniversary.
Stoppini serves as a faculty member at the Nuova Accademia Di Belle Arte Milano, overseeing the “MA in Design – Specialisation in Product Design” course. In 2018, Stoppini was featured alongside 60 influential fashion figures such as the likes of Pierpaolo Piccioli and Franca Sozzani , in the IEO-CCM Foundation’s first campaign.
