Biography
Peter Marino is the world's most sought after architect of luxury fashion stores. Founder of Peter Marino Architecture PLLC, Marino has designed a series of flagships and boutiques for an extensive list of clients that include Louis Vuitton, Armani, Zegna, Calvin Klein , Fendi and Christian Dior. Characterised by their innovative use of light, space and integration of contemporary artwork, Marino’s designs are credited with redefining the standard for upmarket retail design and have been nominated for a number of awards such as the AIA Excellence in Design award.
Marino graduated from Cornell’s College of Architecture, Art and Planning in 1971, working in established firms Skidmore Owings & Merill, George Nelson and I.M. Pei/Cossutta & Ponte, before launching his namesake firm. Beginning his career designing residential properties for the Rothschild and Agnelli families — commissions received through a friendship developed with Andy Warhol — Marino began to focus his attention on retail projects in 1985, when he was approached by the Pressman family to undertake a radical redesign of Barneys New York. The project was instrumental in raising Marino’s profile and kickstarting his work with labels such as Donna Karen.
Marino has also undertaken a number of high profile commercial and cultural design projects including a retrospective at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Marino serves as a member of a number of international organisations, including the board of the New York Foundation for Architecture and in 2012 was named a member of the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.
