Biography

As the former creative director at Garage, an independent fashion publication founded by Dasha Zhukova , Shala Monroque’s edgy editorials and vibrant sartorial choices firmly established her as an influential player in international fashion. Brian Phillips , president and founder of PR firm Black Frame, took over the position in September 2017.

A close friend of Miuccia Prada , Monroque also serves as a fashion consultant for the brand and has host several ‘Miu Miu Musing’ sessions — informal group conversations modelled after traditional literary salons — in locations such as London and New York. A freelance art consultant and writer, Monroque has also contributed to publications such as American Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and runs her own blog under the moniker "Shala’s Rabbit Hole".

A Saint Lucian native, Monroque moved to New York in her late teens to pursue a career in modelling. Whilst working as a hostess at restaurants such as Nobu and Kittichai, Monroque formed a close friendship with art gallery mogul Larry Gagosian, to whom she credits her vast knowledge of art.

Working steadily as an art consultant, Monroque landed her first magazine job in 2009 at style publication Pop, serving under then editor-in-chief Dasha Zhukova who personally appointed Monroque as creative director of Garage on its launch in 2011. Now a fast favourite with street-style photographers, Monroque has featured in Japanese Vogue, Chicago Society Magazine and New York Magazine, and has been a model for Net-A-Porter magazine.
