Biography

American podcaster Avery Trufelman’s critically acclaimed series Articles of Interest delves deep into the stories behind the clothes we wear. Her unique approach to storytelling sheds light on often overlooked narratives around fashion, from its cultural significance to its socio-political implications.

The daughter of two radio producers, Trufelman started her career at NPR before entering the podcast world with an internship at design podcast 99% Invisible, where she climbed the ranks to become the show’s third full-time producer. In 2018 she created Articles of Interest as a spinoff, which quickly gained traction for its insightful exploration of topics like the history of plaid and the politics of pockets. The series has consistently ranked in The New Yorker’s annual roundup of the best podcasts.

In 2021, Trufelman took ownership of the podcast, producing the season, American Ivy, a deep dive into the history of preppy fashion.

In Trufelman’s telling, clothes are more than simply functional, they’re a means of self expression and a way to understand human history. As she says on her podcast: "Whether we like it or not, we are all speaking with our clothes."
