Global Fashion School Rankings 2017

Edinburgh College of Art

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Located in the Edinburgh's Old Town, overlooking the historic Grassmarket, Edinburgh College of Art is the oldest and largest art school in Scotland. The application process for fashion courses at ECA is extremely competitive with an acceptance rate of six percent. However, students rated the quality of recruiters among the lowest in our survey. Other noted areas for improvement are the school's course offerings in business and marketing, which were rated in the bottom quartile compared to other schools. Low student employability as measured by global HR professionals caused ECA to drop in the rankings. However, our survey showed strong results regarding students' contentment with the institution's campus and resources, including technological resources. Seventy-five percent of students now complete internships during their time at the school, with 74 percent feeling prepared to enter the industry after graduation. The quality of teachers scored 90 percent in terms of student satisfaction. Students from ECA won six awards at the 2017 Graduate Fashion Week, including the Christopher Bailey Gold Award.

Student & Alumni Comments

"The small size of the course offers a unique opportunity in which the tutors know you, are able to push you and understand what you need. Providing excellent feedback and pushing your creativity throughout the course."

Student

"Small class sizes create a tight knit student body and a more personal teaching approach, which benefits our work. We are encouraged to innovate and think of new ways to cut, create new shapes and develop textiles. The workrooms are small and certain facilities/machines are lacking, but this often leads to students thinking of other ways to achieve the results they want."

Student

"Intense but a friendly and supportive environment. Perhaps too much emphasis on personal design direction and creative identity at the cost of more contextual and technical education. "
