Arab Fashion Week Attracts Both Local and European Brands

On the opening night of Arab Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2022 edition, a “pink gala” was held to bestow its second annual Fashion Icon Award to Barbie (the award was accepted on her behalf by Kim Culmone, Mattel’s vice president of Barbie design).

As an added tribute to Barbie, Jeremy Scott, creative director of Moschino, received the Arab Fashion Council’s Medal of Honour for lifetime achievement before a fashion show featuring Moschino’s Barbie archive collection rounded out day one.

This edition marked the first Arab Fashion Week to be held in-person since the outbreak of the pandemic. More than 7,000 people attended shows and related events in Dubai.

Other highlights included up-an-coming Emirati label, Euphoria, as well as evening and bridal looks from Palestinian brand, Ihab Jiryis. Closing the week was a show from Dubai-based label Michael Cinco inspired by the art of Gustav Klimt.

A total of 19 international and regional designers showed collections during the event’s five-day run, which wrapped up Thursday.

Jacob Abrian, founder and chief executive of the Arab Fashion Council, who held the event in partnership with Dubai Design District (D3) said: “[Our] line-up of world-class partners is a demonstration of the shared vision and commitment to the principles of equality and progress for creative talents across the region. Together with D3, we are positioning Dubai at the epicentre for the fashion industry in the Middle East.”
