The Korean e-commerce giant was fined 3.29 billion won ($2.81 million) by the country’s top antitrust regulator on Thursday, for its alleged involvement in unfair business practices, The Korea Times reports.

According to the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC), from early 2017 to September 2020, Coupang forced hundreds of sellers to comply with unlawful sales and marketing policies to maintain its competitive edge over other online retailers amid a fierce battle in Korea for market dominance.

The antitrust watchdog said Coupang urged suppliers to post higher prices for their goods on other platforms to ensure its prices had a competitive advantage, the firm is also said to have coerced suppliers to purchase ads and bear the financial burden of promotional events.

Coupang said it will appeal the finding.
