Gaspard Ulliel, the French actor known for his roles in “Saint Laurent” and “A Very Long Engagement,” has died aged 37, his family confirmed in a statement to Agence France-Presse.

Ulliel had been evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Grenoble Tuesday after colliding with a fellow skier at La Rosière resort in the French Alps.

Ulliel won recognition as a rising star in French cinema as a teenager and was nominated three times for the Cesar Award for Most Promising Actor, finally winning at age 20 for his role across Audrey Tautou in the World War-I romantic drama “A Very Long Engagement.

The actor garnered visibility in the English-speaking world playing a young Hannibal Lecter in 2007′s Hannibal Rising. In 2014 he starred as Yves Saint Laurent in director Bertrand Bonello’s unauthorised biopic of the iconic designer.

Ulliel starred in campaigns as the face of Chanel’s “Bleu de Chanel” perfume — one of the brand’s only lines targeted to men — since 2010 and was a fixture at the fashion and beauty giant’s events.

“We have been fortunate to have had by our side all these years a person endowed with great culture, an immense talent, and of unparalleled kindness,” Chanel said in a statement. “He will be sorely missed.”
