The writer, editor and husband to designer Tom Ford died from “natural causes after a prolonged illness” on Sunday, according to a representative for Ford. “It is with great sadness that Tom Ford announces the death of his beloved husband of 35 years, Richard Buckley,” said the brand in a statement. “Richard passed away peacefully at their home in Los Angeles last night with Tom and their son Jack by his side.” Buckley underwent surgery for throat cancer in 1989.
Buckley and Ford met at a fashion show in 1986, when Buckley was an editor for Women’s Wear Daily, and were together for 35 years, marrying in 2014. They share a son, Alexander John Buckley Ford, who was born in 2012.
Buckley started his career at New York Magazine and later worked for Fairchild publications in Paris and New York, as well as Vanity Fair while based in New York and Mirabella and Vogue Italia while based in Milan. In 1999 he was named editor in chief of Vogue Hommes, based in Paris, a position he held until 2005.
