NEW YORK, United States — Tory Burch revels in celebrating strong women, so it's no surprise that she has found inspiration in 90-year-old artist Etel Adnan, whose semi-abstract, richly coloured landscape paintings have recently found a new and very keen audience.

For Burch's latest Pre-Fall collection, Adnan's influence can be clearly seen in the pieced-together sunset motif on the back of a bomber jacket and a shearling topper — but also in the rainbow of shades that were blocked into scarf-like dresses, a navy lace blouse appliquéd with an orange circle and a folksy knit top patch-worked together with heavy contrast stitching. "She has an insane sense of colour," Burch said of Adnan at a preview.

Burch acknowledges that she can’t seem to escape the 1970s and there was a certainly an arts-and-crafts feel to the accessories, too, from the floral-painted platforms to the geometric jewellery. For what it’s worth, the look complements the designer’s other, newer collection, Tory Sport, which will debut swimwear for spring. The brand’s new camera bag, also inspired by Adnan, could be the season’s big hit. Decorated with collegiate stripes and toned-down hardware, it’s preppy and quirky — and quintessentially Tory.
